How did I go from a soldier in Iraq to a healer in Arcata? How did I
use hypnosis to heal my spine from a fourteen fracture injury? How did I decide to conduct my Master's research looking at how genetics influenced hypnotizability?

"Life's too short to make just one decision
Music's too large for just one station
Love is too big for just one nation and
God is to big for just ONE religion"
-Michael Franti (Mikey-J)
Well the absolute truth is... Synchronicity
And not just one synchronicity, but one after the other, on top of another within an even bigger, ect...
A good place to begin is fresh out of high school. Like many others I was confused about my next step of evolution and how to achieve fulfillment. As there were no college funds to support that path, and no real solidified purpose to direct my studies towards, I began searching for alternatives.
Enter the Army Recruiter
I think my first synchronicity must have begun with Michael Franti. He is an extraordinarily talented musician/song writer who uses his lyrics to awaken and uplift the general public from their unconscious autopilot. The more I listened to his music, the more I was fueled for a passion to create positive change in the world. He became my ultimate icon for purposefully directed action (through his many service oriented programs) and hopeful determination (through his lyrical upliftment). The synchronicity happened when I was less than 6 months out of basic training with the release of his new album "Yell Fire". Track 11 is called "Light up ya lighter" and it talks about how people get placed in war situations, people just like me. In fact, it was exactly how I came to be in the Air Force in the first place. My story can be told easiest through his lyrics:
"The army recruiters in the parking lot Hustling kids there jugglin pot Listen, young man, listen to my plan Gonna make you money, gonna make you a man. Bom bom here's what you get... an M-16 and a kevlar vest. You might come home with one less leg but this thing will surely keep a bullet out your chest..."
Although I didn't end up joining the Army, it was certainly this exact path as to how I was recruited into the military. The Army recruiter would go to the high school parking lot and target the kids just about to graduate. With promises of honorable service to the country, free secondary education, traveling the world, starting a career and becoming the most physically fit person possible, I was sold a bag a goodies for the small debt of my soul. Luckily - with help from the added reactance of my other-mother - I decided not to go into the Army and chose the Air Force as a better alternative. Although I wasn't aware of the details at the time, I was following both my dad and his dad's path of joining the Air Force just long enough to fulfill the initial commitment. I made sure that the Air Force wasn't going to send me to Iraq - because I detested the lies and manipulation of our government that put us there - and was convinced when the Air Force recruiter told me that I had a 99.9% chance of NOT going to Iraq. That hope lasted just long enough to sign the 8 year agreement and get sent off to basic training. There I discovered that it's a new Air Force, they are doing more with less, and all branches now deploy during war conflicts. As all luck had it, I got put in the special ops squadron at Eglin AFB in Florida, one of the most deployed units at that time - an annual sacrifice of 3-4 months.
Time for War
As far as any story about sending a child (still only 18 years old) off into a war that he feels deeply unsupportive of goes... mine may be the most positive. However, it must first start with another Michael Franti Synchronicity.
I had the amazing opportunity to see Michael Franti in concert just a month or two before my first deployment. He was in southern Florida at the Langerado Festival and my two favorite people, Melissa and Cheryle, joined me down on the trip. As I matured I had grown even fonder of Michael Franti and his messages. For me the only thing I needed before going to war was a giant, post-show, sweaty hug from my idol. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this is just a tiny piece of what I received. Melissa knew someone who was arranging the festival and set me up with my very own meet-and-greet. Michael had just returned from travels to Iraq himself in which he made a documentary from the perspective of the people and soldiers under siege titled "I know I'm not alone" which was his inspiration for the "Yell Fire" album. Therefore, he was really open to meeting a new recruit heading into the conflict. He wanted to interview me and find out just what were my motivations for going to war. This is when I first recognized the gift and potential behind my Iraq-fate. I told him that I am a peace-spy, infiltrating Iraq to drop love bombs and radiant peace from within. He of course loved this and decided to do a second interview for his "FRANTV". I think to this day, making HIM laugh and feel inspired has been one of my greatest joys. He ended up dedicating a song to me during his show and of course it was my synchronistic treasure - Light up ya lighter.
War Again-New and Improved
My second deployment went much better than the first. Instead of taking me months to learn my job and to understand the game I had to play, this time it took only a week or two to adjust. There was no more fear and my work-ethic was solid. I was fired up and ready to have that mental space again. That space where I didn't have to think about how I was going to obtain and cook food, about what I was going to wear and do Friday night, about paying for bills and doing chores. In Iraq, all of that is provided and supplied. There's only one thing
I felt liberated and accepted for the first time. I never wanted to leave this remarkable time in my growth and understanding. The book that really propelled me this time was the "Celestine Prophecy" by James Redfield and it was an adventure novel all about synchronicities. I had even more spiritual insights and awakenings combined with momentary glimpses of enlightenment and oneness.
I ever got to wear and one place I got to eat. There was nothing to spend money on and the only decision I made after work was whether or not I was going to work-out. And this time there was good supervision. I finally had supervisors who knew my job well and cared about the work more than the person. I excelled in this environment and even tried staying an extra month or two. I finally felt appreciated and validated for all the hard work I did and I received the highest honor for a Senior Airman in my field – the Air Force Achievement Medal. With my acceptance and freedom to be more fully myself, I practiced yoga on the plane and found this deployment one of the most deeply satisfying times of my entire life. The conditions were still the same, but I was different, more prepared and centered within myself, and that makes all the difference.
Honorable Discharge - Enter Hypnotherapy
On January 3rd 2010 I was officially released from active duty and I returned home to relax for six months before going to school at Humboldt State University that fall. Circumstances occurred that canceled my travel plans to Costa Rica for a month which ended up being one of my biggest synchronicities. I had made it home just before Christmas Eve and there’s this amazing tradition in Santa Fe, NM - the Canyon Road Farolito Walk. Thousands of people show up and clamor together to look at the millions of Farolios (small, sand-filled, paper bags illuminated with candles) displayed artistically. It’s always a good time as my dad becomes boisterous, gathering passerbies in singing Christmas carols in a fun and flirtatious manner. Out of all the thousands of attractive prospects for my dad to get a number from, Cathy Maier was the special lady of my next synchronicity. Cathy was about to attend the Hypnotherapy Academy of America - arguably the world’s most prestigious hypnotherapy training. At a later date with my pops, she brought him a brochure for the school and suggested I might be interested in attending, from hearing stories about my recent growth. I found the brochure absolutely stunning as it talked about the science behind all these transcendental experiences I had been feeling and reading. In fact, the class started and lasted for the exact time I was supposed to be in Costa Rica.
I had been hypnotized before by my good friend Mark Perry and it really helped me to control my high school anger issues. I hadn’t thought much about hypnosis since, but planned on getting another session while in town to quit cigarettes (a terrible consequence of the Air Force) and prepare me for my next step in life - college. This brochure came to me at the perfect timing as the next day was my appointment with Mark. This session was better than expected and with it I quit smoking in just this one session. Afterwards, I mentioned the school and what-do-ya-know, Mark is a graduate of that academy. Not only that but he was a teacher there for years. He said go by and talk to the founder Tim, maybe he’ll work out some kind of work-trade or scholarship program. It doesn’t hurt to ask right? I found myself at the academy in only a few minutes’ drive from Mark’s house and talked to Aleah Ames, another teacher/receptionist. Another important detail in this story is that Mark is also the host for his own talk-radio show called “A Matter of the Mind”. I was his guest after I returned home from Iraq and talked about all the miraculous insights and positivity that came out of my time at war. He gave me an extra copy of the show which I just so happened by chance to still have with me in my car. After talking with Aleah enthusiastically for a few minutes, I mentioned the radio show and bam- realized I had a copy she could have. She listened to the show and thought “this guy definitely needs to come to this school.”
To prepare you, this next synchronicity is absolutely amazing.. During the phone call from Aleah to Tim to try and persuade him into letting me attend the program, she gets a call and clicks over – it’s an anonymous donor who wants to graciously give $500 to Kyle’s cause. To this day it continues to baffle me. I didn’t even know I was going to the school that morning when I met Mark for that appointment, and I didn’t tell anyone. How could someone have possibly known I was there? It turned out to be Cathy and she just did it in case somehow I tried to attend. When Aleah clicked back to Tim and told him what had just happened he found it too remarkable to deny. I was admitted to the school as the first and last veteran scholarship/work trade ever.
CMSCHt & NLP
Thanks to the graces of all these amazing people in my life, and the guidance of spirit I finished the clinical portion of school and became an IBH fellow (International Board of Hypnotherapists). My official title became Certified Medical Support Clinical Hypnotherapist (CMSCHt) or the Chief Master Sergeant of Hypnosis as I liked to call it. If I would have stayed in the Air Force my entire life I might have had a shot to make CMS, however after finishing my hypnosis training only three months after I discharged, I obtained the same initials of CMS. Major Synchronicity! I stayed on to complete Patrick Singleton’s Neuro-Linguistic Programming School and got my second official certification of becoming a healer. My path was set ablaze by fate and destiny! I even got to reunite with an ol' friend at the Taos Solar Music Festival.
Pachamama and the Blessing that Healed My Spine
School was pretty intense for me and although I desperately wanted to open my own healing practice fresh out of training, I needed to devote all my time and energy into Biological Psychology - Neuroscience. I became fascinated by the human experience and how the mind creates reality. I was enthralled to discover neurogenesis (the growth of new neurons) and all the psychological mechanisms behind thought and action. I came to realize that we don't so much as perceive the world as co-create it. Life is out there, external to us, but we have to recreate it on our brains to actually see and experience it. In this electro-chemical process of recreation, all of our biases, past experiences, environmental influences, peers groups, emotions, beliefs, stereotypes, and even our genes determine how those experiences are seen and perceived. We are not so much as a mirror to reality as a computer, taking in input from all types of stimulus and producing output that approximates some form of a subjective reality. Every moment is different for every individual and no two individuals can ever be seen to experience the exact same experience. This is shown time and time again through experimental and field research studies.
Eventually I was on a path to travel. I traveled to Bali (where I got to spend Christmas and New Years with my Franti) on my way to semester abroad to Australia. I got to visit the entire east coast and still have a couple weeks for New Zealand. I met up with a friend from the Air Force in Thailand for a week on the way home. I fell desperately in love with a beautiful woman named Victoria back in Humboldt and was very happy to return home. But then, just after a month of being back, I was running safety kayak for my summer job at Center Activities when I got rolled in a rapid and suffered a major concussion. Recovering from this wasn't easy, especially considering I was just about to start my dual program - 5th years Masters program in Academic Research in the neuroscience field. This meant that I had to recover from a concussion, start my Master’s program, all while finishing my bachelors in Psychology. Meanwhile my really good friend was in Chile for his program abroad and Victoria and I had planned a visit to see him and stop off in Peru for two weeks to see Machu Picchu.
We did the five day backpacking trip up Machu Picchu to arrive on December 31st 2012. At the top of Machu Picchu Mountain, Victoria and I did a blessing to Pachamama – Mother Earth. My intention was to ask for a complete healing on my post-concussive issues, but my mind flashed to my back. I’d been having pretty severe back problems since my Military service, only accelerated by each tour to Iraq. Even a three hour car ride would cause excruciating discomfort. The Air Force never found any resolve for me although they tried (chiropractor three times a week, 4000 mg of Ibuprofen a day, physical therapy, electrotherapy, traction, and Percocet). I just backpacked for five strenuous days up the steepest path – The Salkantay Trail – and the blessing I’d been planning all along was for my spiritual realignment with a complete concussion healing. As soon as my mind drifted on my back I thought, “Now don’t take on too much Kyle, that’s a huge project and let’s just fix your head first.” I laugh at these words now.
We returned beat, but unscathed. Yet, opportunity knocks. The Snow Jacks (a Humboldt Ski/Snowboarding club) plans an annual trip during the winter. I had been traveling the world the last year, so I missed two seasons in a row. I wasn’t going to miss this! Three days after we returned from our three week power travel to South America, we were repacked and ready to join the Jacks for a five day trip to Mammoth Mountain in southern California. At the end of day two, catching the last lift ten minutes after it closed to the top of the mountain I somehow got off course and ended up at the top of the big jumps. I typically do the big jumps at ski hills but not with any tricks or skill. I just like to face my fears and jump straight, typically screaming “WEEEEEEE”. Well as it turns out, some jumps are specifically designed for sponsored professionals to perform corkscrews (a special type of flip that rotates 360˚ around both the horizontal and vertical planes). Thinking ahead of time about how I was just going to hit the second jump to be safe because I didn’t know where to start for the first jump and typically after the first jump you just go straight through the rest, I thought I was well prepared. In fact, I was a novice jumper about to hit the “Showcase” jump at full speed and having no intention of slowing down at all before or after takeoff. Due to the large amount of friction that occurs when the corkscrew is performed properly, the deck and landing ramp of the jump was shortened significantly. None of this became apparent to me until I was about ten feet from the tip of the jump, at speeds near 60MPH (there was an ap that tracked how fast you were going). The jump was kicking me vertical, something that’s never happened before. Doctors estimated I free-falled for about 40-50 feet before landing directly on my tailbone and lower spine. I had fourteen fractures in all to include my vertebra from L1-L6, coccyx, sacrum, two ribs, and pelvis – the largest bone in your body. After I caught my breath, regained consciousness for the second time, and forced myself to ski down the rest of the mountain (it’d been closed for about an hour now) I began telling myself that this was really all a miraculous blessing. That it was too synchronistic that merely a week prior I asked Pachamama –Mother Earth – for a healing and here I am, slamming into an Icy Earth. I remembered that during the blessing my mind flashed to my back and I accepted this as my opportunity to heal my Air Force trauma.
The Hypnotic Road to Healing
A week later it was start of my final semester of my Bachelors and my second semester of my Master’s degree. I had to take a dance class to graduate (it counted for three different requirements) and I had to continue working on my thesis for my Master’s program. My friends and family were all pretty supportive of dropping the semester and starting again in the Fall, but I wasn’t going to have that. People had already booked flights to see me graduate in the spring and I wasn’t going to let my blessing interfere with that! I sent Mark a script for my hypnosis healing and he recorded me a CD. I played my CD 2-3 times a day for the first 60 days and then about once a day for another 30 days. I spent a total of two weeks in bed and then another six weeks in a wheel chair. With Victoria by my side to help me sit up and put my socks on we faced this most challenging part of my life with strength, determination, and humor. It’s still a bit unbelievable at this point, but I managed to maintain my 4.0 GPA and graduate Summa Cum Laude just four months after the blessing.
The best part was that I really did it! I healed by spine to pre-military conditions. In fact, I can’t remember it being this strong, straight, and flexible in my entire life! Healing my spine in this dramatic way pushed me to pursue research in the field for my Master’s Thesis, which then pushed me further to open up my own practice here in Arcata. The final synchronicity happened the morning I woke up to go to the career fair at HSU. Cathy left me a voicemail from Israel! We hadn’t spoken since she left about four years ago. She wanted to catch up and told me that her own hypnotherapy practice was going extremely well. The career fair didn’t hold much promise and I was feeling a bit disappointed. Just then I got a text from Dave Berman (a fellow hypnotherapist/NLP practionier here in Arcata) telling me that he was moving and he wanted me to take over his office to open my own practice. This story is truly remarkable and every time I tell it I get chills.
Life is remarkable and the more we pay attention, the more we truly see.
Two months later I was heading to Iraq, 19 years old, filled with fear and uncertainty, with a minimal understanding of how to do my job as a C-130 Crew Chief. I struggled consistently with my Air Force peers as I was too "smiley" and talked of stupid things such as physics, energy, and consciousness. With my Kevlar helmet and vest donned, and my gas mask attached at my hip, I thought at least I would gain some respite from their torment - as the plane shooting spiraled down onto Iraq soil in its classic counter-attack maneuver while shooting off its chaff and flare - since we're officially inside the active combat zone. This couldn't be further from what actually happened. Drenched in syrup with a splotchy, coerced buzz-cut in a dusty 130˚heat, I realized that the real battle was not going to be from the mortar attacks we had to frequently dodge, but from within my own ego and resistance to their provocations.

Holding one of the 7 golden AK-47's in existence - specially comissioned by Saddam Hussein himself (Sept, 2008)
These people held the keys to my livelihood and it initially seems to my happiness. I was stuck, side-by-side with people who detest me at work, 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. Then they'd still be back at the small compound where I would work-out and sleep. I had to live, eat, work, and breathe beside these people every day for over three months. For me, this was absolute hell. The only rest would come from the occasional static-filled call back home, yoga inside the safety of my trailer, and from books. One remarkable thing about Iraq was that although I was stuck working some much more than ever before (remember, it didn't matter rain, shine, healthy, sick, rested, or up all night from jet planes rocking my trailer, I was at work all day, every day) I finally found time to read. I'll never forget the moment when I was reading "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle and found peace within my mind for the very first time by watching the voice in my head and realizing that I am not my thoughts. I am some essence beyond thought or form. This was actually experienced visceral when we were directly hit by a mortar. I was the closest, but thankfully it was a series of three and not four. Judging by the distance and timing of the attacks, it would have landed on top of me just before I could have made it to the bunker. I had an out-of-body experience. Realizing that I had run directly in the trajectory of the attacks in trying to find the nearest cover I thought I was about to be blown to bits. Anticipating my death while running full speed, a part of me left my body and ran even faster, arriving inside the bunker before I could. It was then that I realized I am not my body, for if that mortar had hit me, there would have still been some essence of me safe, and in the bunker. I felt my body catch up and reunite with my.... soul???.... and the world regained its sense of time and space. It was around that same time when it all started coming together. I was doing my yoga practice - thanks to the Bryan Kest DVD Melissa sent me - every day in the secrecy of my tiny trailer. I recognized that my thoughts created a dramatic effect for how I felt and that even with provocation, I was still in control of my reactions. In the words of the great yoga-god Bryan Kest "it's ok to be uncomfortable, but we don't have to react to it. The goal is to keep a calm mind and deep breath while in these uncomfortable situations... that's our yoga practice." I became aware of my power to influence my body and its healing. When I'd be especially tired or sore from the day, I'd eat my food or take my shower with the intension of healing my body. Each chew or soapy swipe would hold a sense of great power and potential. It was hard at first to remain focused on my intention during each bite or throughout the entire shower, but that was my yoga, that was my practice. It soon became evident that this practice was actually working and I would feel the strength, health, or energy of my intention. It really helped me make it through those final weeks.
Additionally, with diligent mirroring of a foe and incessant diligence with which I read the job-guides, I eventually learned my job extremely well. I became known for my work-ethic, detailed precision, and stewardship as well as my eccentric personality with energetic optimism. I finally made some decent friends and found deep inner peace and gratitude for being sent to this distant, disturbed land.
